Shakespearian Thoughts

I was going through old files and documents from a USB, that I used to have back in my freshmen year in high school. As I was finding interesting documents, I ran upon this quote interesting essay I wrote. I have grown as a writer so much because compared to how crappy this excerpt below sounds, my writing is way more intriguing and actually makes sense. Some of the statements I make are ridiculous and contradicting but judge for yourself. :]

"Shakespearian characters seem to have certain traits that reflect how the author feels about the world. At the time that Shakespeare wrote the story of Othello and Macbeth, he seemed to be troubled since these two carried out two protagonist that emphasized what tragedy living can be. Othello a man full of strength and wisdom is overpowered by three elements, the animosity that surrounds him from those who envy him, the ambition of his enemies, and his weak heart is manipulated to think his on true love has betrayed him. On the other hand, Shakespeare also wrote about Macbeth, a man who used his ambition as an advantage against those who respected him. He carried his anger against those in his way for power and he manipulated the ones around him to protect himself from the law. Othello and Macbeth both similar in that they used Ambition, Animosity, and Manipulation but Othello had these used against him while Macbeth used them against others.
I hate the Moor;
And it is thought abroad, that 'twixt my sheets
He has done my office: I know not if 't be true;
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind, will do as if for surety.
(Act I, Scene 3)
Othello is a man who worked to beat the odds and grow into a respected man amongst those he thought to be honest and honorable. He not only grew up in a poor environment but he was seen as inferior for his skin color. To this Othello only ignored and work hard to gain a position worthy of becoming a future leader. Besides all the odds, he managed to gain the respect from high authorities for his dedication. The only problem was that many were becoming jealous of Othello and this meant his enemies were closer than he ever imagined. Because Othello did not promote one of his dedicated servants a higher positioned, Iago, his supposed employee, began to dislike Othello. This dislike grew into a hate that made Iago want to take revenge. Iago used his ambition for power against Othello by sabotaging his love life. In the meantime, Othello trusted his so-called friend who used all his power to kill Othello’s reputation. In this quote we see how Othello may think he is being respected by his trusted friend when in reality Iago has been plotting Othello’s doom since the first act.
On the other hand the main character in Shakespeare’s Macbeth story seemed to be plotting against all of his friends. Three witches play the role of making Macbeth feel he is going to be king of all the land. With the witches’ predictions, Macbeth seemed to be more and more intrigued to the point where he was consumed with ambition. This drive to take more than what he deserved caused Macbeth to lose control of his emotions. "

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.” (Act IV, Scene I)
Even though Macbeth was a character who began the story as a weak and easy to control character, others took over his mind and made him believe the true way to succeed was by getting rid of his friends and loved ones. This ambition drove him crazy and he knew his fate was to be determined by the number of people he would have to get rid of along the way.
Othello is different in that he was the one that could not control his emotions either and the thought of being ambition did not run his mind like it did with Macbeth. Othello’s pure heart was only broken by the misleading comments from his so called friend Iago. This Iago character caused much turmoil in the life of Othello to the point that Desdemona, Othello’s only true and honest love was killed by Othello under a miscommunication created by no other than Iago.By using his wit a man only driven by ambition and animosity destroyed a poor man’s life and he was left alone.
I kissed thee ere I killed thee, no way but this,
Killing myself, to die upon a kiss. (Othello, scene 2 )
Both characters are considered true tragedies because of their experiences with other individuals who either took advantage of their weak and naïve mind or they simply were empowered with the urge to take anything available at all cost. Othello and Macbeth do have in common that they both suffered a tremendous ending leading to their own death full of regret and little or no regret. ON one hand Macbeth did not regret all the murders he committed as he conformed to a life of misfortune and hell. Othello on the other hand never forgave himself for murdering his loving wife since it was all caused by a childish and feverish trick played on him by his backstabbing friend. Shakespeare created to well thought out character that reflected the flip side to what can happen when one is ignorant to the reality present in front of their eyes. Like the witches in Macbeth stated, “fair is foul, and foul is fair,” and reality I not just based on what is visible but on the long run, anyone can deceive us at any given point. "
